Vienna felt herself falling over the edge into a swirling vortex of color so brilliant, she could barely take it in. She’d heard herself scream when Cleveland pierced her skin, but the split second of pain was quickly eclipsed by a storm of ecstasy sweeping her over the edge. She’d swear until her dying day, she’d been able to feel the moment their DNA melded together.

Friends often spoke of the time it had taken them to feel as though they were one with their spouse, but Vienna could truthfully say it had only taken one heartbeat for her soul to join with her mate’s. Mate? Oh, my heavenly daze! Laughing to herself, she thought about Brigette’s twist of the common saying. The young maid assigned to Vienna’s wing of her grandparents’ home had been one of her few allies. Brigette insisted the age-old saying wasn’t about time, but about condition… so, she’d always made a point of pronouncing the word clearly with an emphasis on the zzz.

“Your mind is a maze, baby. You went from melding DNA to a friendly maid with amazing ease. I could spend a millennium studying the way you think and still be considered a novice.”

She couldn’t hold back the giggle bubbling up inside. He’d seemed so serious each time they’d spoken, and… Holy fucking hell, I just let a shifter I barely know claim me. A tsunami of panic crashed over her as reality replaced the adrenaline high. Squirming beneath Cleveland was no small feat… even though he held most of his weight on his forearms, he quickly lowered his torso enough to prevent her escape.

“Stop, Vienna.” Her mind was screaming at her to run, reaching out with her senses, trying to find the nearest magnetic ley line. “No, baby, you aren’t going anywhere. Take a deep breath and talk to me.” Cleveland’s voice softened, but the words were still clearly a command. He rolled to the side but didn’t release her as she’d hoped he would.

Another wave of panic moved over her, but this time it was followed by a stinging swat to her right ass cheek. Vivi gasped, pulling in a breath of much-needed oxygen. Freddy Pud-Fucker that hurt. Her head started to clear after the second swat, the deep breath that followed clearing most of the fog from her brain.

“Not sure who Freddy is, but I’m damned glad you’re back with me.” He pulled her into a tight hug, keeping her cocooned in his warm embrace long enough, she felt their heartbeats synchronize. “That’s it, nice and easy, baby. You got hit with a lot in a short time. I know it’s all new—hell, it’s new for me too, but I was obviously more prepared.” Pulling back, he pressed a kiss against her forehead before leaning his own against hers, giving her a moment to process her rioting emotions. “I haven’t lived near my family for a long time, but even without having them nearby, I think growing up in an environment where shifters and magic were the norm gave me a big advantage.
